GamCare and the tools worth knowing about

Post by greenfeltgaz »

Thought I'd put a tidy reference together since it comes up a fair bit. None of this is preaching, just what's there if you want it.

GamCare run the National Gambling Helpline, free and confidential, phone or live chat, open round the clock. You don't have to be in crisis to use it, plenty of people ring just to talk something through.

GAMSTOP is the national self-exclusion. One sign-up blocks every UKGC-licensed site for the period you pick.

Then the per-account tools on the sites themselves. Deposit limits, loss limits, session reminders, time-outs (a short break, a day up to six weeks) and full self-exclusion at that operator.

There's also blocking software you can put on your own devices, the bank gambling-block toggle a lot of banks now offer, and BetBlocker which is free.

Question for the thread: which of these have you actually used, and did it do the job? Real experiences are more use than a list.

Solid list. The bank block is the one I'd push people toward, it's quietly very effective because it sits below the casino entirely. Toggle it on in the banking app and card deposits to gambling sites just bounce.

Mine had a cooling-off to switch it back off, 48 hours if I remember, which is the same friction principle as the deposit-limit raise. Layer it on top of GAMSTOP and you've covered both the account and the payment.

used the time-out tool when i needed a breather but wasn't ready for the full block. picked a week. account just locks, no fuss, opens back up after.

rang the helpline once too, years ago. half expected a lecture and it really wasn't, just someone listening. so if anyone's hovering over that, it's genuinely fine.

Good roundup. Worth flagging for the offshore angle that crops up in the new sites board. Those sites aren't on GAMSTOP and a lot won't honour a UKGC self-exclusion, so the device-level blockers and the bank block matter more there, not less, because they work regardless of where the site is licensed.

BetBlocker being free and cross-device is the one I'd point people to for that. The casino tools only ever cover that one casino.
